Welcome to my library page!

Welcome to the Media Center!  Our Media Center is a warm, friendly, and vibrant place where our students learn to research, collaborate, and sometimes just escape into a fabulous reading adventure.

We believe that literacy skills are the center of all learning.  We also feel that reading for pleasure should be a joyful experience for children.  Our school library is very fortunate to be fully supported by our principal who is passionate about literacy and who is an advocate for high quality libraries. Leaders who value the library program are essential in developinging academically successful students.  Kentucky Department of Education’s document Beyond Proficiency @ Your Library (2010) states, “Research consistently shows positive relationships between school libraries and student achievement.  The research studies show that school libraries can have a positive impact on student achievement.” (Scholastic, 2008).    Our school is dedicated to providing the best library facilities, and highly educated and knowledgeable  library staff members to support the curriculum in the school.  We are fortunate to have leaders with a clear vision for the future of the libraries in our district!

Working together with the administrative team, the Library/Technology team strives to insure that the library is outfitted with the most current, relevant, and highly rated literature.  Students are taught how to search and locate materials independently using Follett’s Destiny Library Management System. Our youngest students come once a week to listen to a story that is connected to the unit they are studying or to an experience to which they can relate.   In The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease, the author provides evidence from years of research concluding: “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” (http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/rah-ch1.html).  After listening to a story read aloud, students are given an opportunity to check out books to take home for 2 weeks.  Older students are given independent access to the library to check out at their teacher’s discretion.

We collaborate with classroom teachers to support them with texts and/or digital literacy which is selected in conjunction with the standards set forth in Kentucky’s Common Core.  Technology is integrated into the curriculum and used to produce artifacts, enhance student learning and prepare our students to be digitally responsible citizens.

In addition, we host several book fairs through out the year.  Each purchase made at one of our book fairs results in new books for our library.  We welcome parent volunteers- please feel free to stop by any time!
